Along with a BBC crew, filming was conducted for an upcoming documentary on "The Moon" which will air in the United Kingdom in February and on BBC America a few months later. In preparation for filming of the BBC documentary “The Moon: A Biography” William was a one-man Engineer for the Moon Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah. But what happened when he flipped the “on” switch? Absolutely nothing! No power, no water pumps, no sewage and waste systems, and no internet! The gas stove did, however, work, but without water the teabag s lonely. So the Whispering Sands Hotel was his outpost for the two days. Oh well, very glad I went into Nursing! I was proud of myself for finding the habitat without the aid of a map, but once I got there and realized that the power wasn’t going to work, I got really upset. The habitat itself was a total wreck inside. In some ways, I felt responsible to clean up before the filming crew got there. I had specifically gone down early to Hanksville to get everything “ready.” However, there was no way I could clean up 4 months of non-use in just a few hours. So I was a little debilitated by my anger that people had not taken care of “my hab” and had let it get to this state. At the end of the day, the BBC crew was late and the sun was already slipping away. Our filming was rushed. Rosie, Ruth, Martin, and Mark…all from Great Britain were very professional and young. They had traveled 5 hours just to do about 1.5 hours of filming. Peter, Leslie, and I all helped one another into our various simulation “space suits” and “depressurized” in the airlock. Filming continued outside with Leslie riding around on the ATV…she did it like a pro! Peter completed some scientific measurements for a future experiment planned in February 2005. I walked around in my new analogue of a MoonSkin mechanical counter-pressure suit (which looks like a SCUBA diving outfit). After a brief group interview, the BBC crew disappeared as quickly as they had come.
