Dusty Astronaut (Moon)

Despite its beautiful, "crispy" appearance, lunar dust can be a nuisance to both man and machine, clogging gears and irritating lungs.

Now it looks as if scientists have developed an innovative way of removing these pesky particles without the need of hiring a professional lunar duster.

(New Scientist) To solve the problem, Clark's team is working on SPARCLE, a "lunar dust buster" that astronauts could utilise in the airlock to a moon base. The device consists of a positively charged metallic nozzle fitted to an electron gun, similar to those used in electron microscopes, which fires a focused beam of electrons from a hot filament.

Following a moonwalk, astronauts would scan the beam across the surface of their dirty equipment, showering it with electrons until all the dust particles and the surface become negatively charged and start to repel one another. This would loosen the particles' grip, allowing them to fly to the positively charged nozzle where they are captured.

While this technology will obviously benefit astronauts fortunate enough to explore Earth's nearest neighbor, it will also help reduce "lunar chores" around a future space base (as our astronauts would probably rather work at the lab than dust it off).

The Space Studies Board gave high ratings for NASA's efforts and demonstrated capability for coming up with the essential technology for coming to grips with the very real problem of Lunar Dust. The issue has many facets, not least of which is understanding the dynamics of the dusty lunar exosphere "before extended human activity" on the Moon, not just because of it's demonstrated hazard to personnel and equipment but to understand Lunar Dust in it's relatively "pristine" condition. Few realize, for example, that the Apollo LM descent and landing "certainly," according to the National Science Academies, propelled some dust to escape velocities and much of the fan to the altitude of the Command Module, where it did not really pose a hazard, but presented an interesting problem. Most of the science that could have been gathered from Surveyor 3's long exposure was obliterated by the landing of Apollo 12, ~153 meters away. Close examination of what pitting there could be found on the artifacts from the Hughes robotic lander was traced to the arrival of Apollo 12, with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean.

Dust fouled every vacuum seal. This and a variety of other mitigating technologies will be a constant companion and a part of life on the surface, and a very interesting topic in the context of lunar morphology.
